I’m Kai Schultz, a University of Alabama student with experience in journalism, criminal justice research, newsroom production and management.
I’m interested in work centered on information, investigation and public service. That can mean a newsroom, a research project, managing a team or, eventually, public service. The setting changes. The basics do not: ask good questions, check the facts, make sense of incomplete information and communicate clearly.

I’m interested in how people make choices under pressure, with incomplete information and competing incentives, and how ideas like bounded rationality can help explain those decisions.
My current proposal uses an anonymous undergraduate survey to look at peer influence, emotional decision-making, risk perception and self-reported low-level offending.

I work behind the scenes on WVUA 23 News throughout the week. I work cameras for the 9 p.m. newscasts on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I edit for the 5 p.m. newscast on Fridays.
During those shows, the WVUA livestream will appear here automatically.
LEADERSHIP
Responsible for store operations, staffing, training, inventory, scheduling and day-to-day problem solving while balancing a full academic load and media work.
Advanced through training and leadership roles with responsibility for people, standards and execution in a fast-paced operation.
Editing, camera operation and newsroom production experience in a working local news environment.
ABOUT
I started college focused on sports media. Journalism taught me how to ask better questions, verify information and explain complicated things clearly. Criminal justice and psychology pulled me toward human behavior, institutions and decision-making.
Outside the classroom, management taught me a lot about making decisions when the answer is not obvious, keeping track of several priorities at once and being accountable when other people are depending on me.
Long term, I’m interested in investigative, intelligence, legal and public-service work, especially roles where writing, analysis, judgment, curiosity and discretion matter.
